Turning 2D into 3D

The first task we were set on monday was too look back into our reserch and draw 3 zoomed in picturees of images that we had picked out. I picked out 2 images, one of skateboard design and an outside sculpture of wich i really liked the pattern and colour used.

Once we had draw these images we then had too attempt to recreate them in paper

This tak really showed me that by thinking simply you can easily start moving ideas from flat on a page to given them a physical structure. This also showed me that sometimes its better to just work rather than to spend ages working on ideas.

The next task was to take this drawing that we had made and draw then into a mold of half our show of which we had made using 5 layers of masking tape. I really enjoyed this task as i found the process of take a simple shape or image and creating a shoe design quite rewarding.

Images from research

During my research i kept finding myself being drawn too work or products in which included to use of circles and circular shaped objects. I think the first reason is that it creates an amazing visual effect both with the combination of different sizes and the use of colour. Another reason why i picked these shapes is cirles can be used to create structures and having ideas about this could help when i start making in fashion.

Animation

I ahve always been intrested in the way smocking it used in animations and how smoke can be used to show time passing even when other objects are not moving, as well as it resurgence in young people. When we were takes to look at bigg issues for milenials too animate i thought this was the perfect opertunity too work on this idea. For the starting point i wanted to have a full cigarette and my initial finishing point was a flat franchised cigarette, however when i worked out my halfway point i realised that the ideas whasent chaging enough and so i decided to drasticaly change it too a rocket, which was intented to represent the futre and the fats chages to technology.

I am happy with what i created as like most other people we underestimated how long it takes to draw in pencil then go over in pen and then animate. cI would be interested in the animation course as i think you i could make nice things with time and more research .

Exploring light through photography

The first task we were set was to take 3 bad photographs. I quickly realized that if i thought about it too much the eventual composition of the image would have reason so without thinking i just took a photo of the tutor and then took a screen shot of that. My reasoning was that this was lazy and without thought. For the final image i thought that something that was a bad image would not be and image at all and is why i choose to take a 1 second video.

The next task was to explore shadows /texture and light/reflections

Trip to the Tate

I enjoyed the whole day of visiting the Tate as we were given the freedom to explore the Tate in out own time to research and sketch the work. I particularly enjoyed the artist in society collection specifically the section on geometric shapes and the exhibition around Aids. Another collection i enjoyed was the Guerrilla Girls exhibition because i thought the message was powerful.

I decided however that the Exhibition 1968: Protest and the handbook was the one that i enjoyed the most and linked both to me and my project around descent due too the political messages involved.

Final idea creation

Overall i am not happy with the final piece that i created as i felt that the planning was going really well and i was considering different ideas however on the day before create i panicked when coming up with ways to execute these ideas. While i feel that the messege behind what i am trying to comunicate is clear i feel that the work itself is visualy not rights as well as there being uncorrected errors.

In furture i will try to maintain a broad approach to research but allso focus more on finding way to execute ideas rather than leaving it till last.

Generating ideas

The main idea that i was interested in was this idea of physical descendent of which then i will combine with a literal meaning of descent such as family descent. The first ideas i started working with was this idea about how income across the country and i thought about crazy ideas such as physically hanging money. I then realised that this was not doable and started thinking of ways to maybe illustrate this and even animate this.

I then started looking at aspecst such as the composition of the final images and started thinking about including people or a person and even looking at ways i could bring in cultural elements from my background.

The real change and inspiration came when what i came across a book of posters full of climate change and how things like tempreture and sea levels are going up. The book was essentially fool of amazing design revolving around things ascending and this gave me the idea to reverse this and change the idea to money.

Trip to Autograph ABP

Similer to my trip to the Hayward gallery i was really inspired by the idea of descending from a particular place/ culture and how this is represented as well as other ideas within the work. This is seen in particular with Omar Victor Diop’s DIASPORA work. In the work Diop features intriguing Africans in european history, while also including contemport football references as Diop feels that feelings of tensions of discovery, glory and recognition as well as facing the challenges of being framed as ‘other’ are relatable to player playing in europe today.

The second exhibition was a series of photographs by Arpita Shah.

“Arpita Shah’s photographs portray women from the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities in Scotland, who practice the tradition of head covering or veiling.”

The first this that i like about the images was how simple the compotition was, the images were simple head shots of the women but allowed the different ways the women had decided to cover their head to be shown clearly and i found this help you appreciate them and was powerful. I think that the compisition of the images along side the plaque which describes which one they had on as well as they each woman, in their on words, cover their head or used a veil.

‘The Sari is a sacred tradition in my future, when i wear it i feel like its this beautiful bejeweled Purdan that wraps me up and transports me back to india’
