Start of Bauhaus birthday project

We began the day with a presentation on Bauhaus and happenings from Olly and Joss in wich we learen about what Bauhaus was as well as the infuential people alongside vasious work from the movement. I found this very helpful as it was a good time to come up with idea and expose myself to world of work i would not normally consider.Screen Shot 2018-11-13 at 09.39.53.png

We then followed break with an introduction to our Bauhaus 100th birthday party brief. The project looks exiting as it is a detachment from the common forms of vidual communications and allows fro plenty f oppertunity to experiment woth forms of ideas and the colours and shapes used.

Making of book cover

On the final day of the manifesto book making project we began the day with a group crit in which we broke up into groups and discussed each others work.

These were my positive comments:

  • Very nice clean style with clashing bold Lino print
  • creative indesign layout with text and images

I am happy with these comments as from the start i wanted to use this project as an opportunity to show of my skills and practice a wide range if illustrating styles as well as using different software.

These were my points of action:

  • Lino print is a little bit messy with thickness of ink
  • doesn’t line up in some places

I think while i didn’t want to compromise on the quality of the print i should have considered more the practice use of it as a paper. In future i will either use a scanned in and printed vision or just use less ink. I will also practise making the end paper line up with the card on just making the card more.

Finishing making of book

We began finishing of our books by gluing a small use of paper to the spine a a bit of each side to create some stability. We then made the hard cover of the book my measuring the size of the book and cutting that out of card of which we wrapped with book cloth and then glued together with the pages of the books.

As great as my book is so far and i am exited now i have these skills there are things that i definitely will be able to improve upon in the construction of the book. One area is the amount of pain t i used on the lino print created an issue as the glue used to out the book together reactivated the pain casing the end pages to sick together and rip my. I would also like to work on ho well i alined to pages of the book with the hard cover.

Printing and early stages of making book

On Monday we began the the first stages of physically make the book that our manifesto would be in. We began by preparing our file to be printed and then working out how to get our own paper that we a bought into the printer so we could print on it.

The printing process took me a while as i kept making mistakes with the setting and working out how to get my paper into the pinter but once i had printed i was really happy with the quality of the pages despite there being some bleed.

Once the pages were printed we cut of the space we had left for bleed and we began to tie the pages together with string. While we were cutting our pages to size we also cut down the end paper that we had made from line and glued the edges to the book near the string to complete this stage of the book.

Layout day

We began the day by listening to a talk about layouts from Julie Van Severen and then researching different layouts.

The second half of the day was about how to layout text and image on InDesign. Soof led a software tutorial on how to layout text and image on InDesign and I learned how to effectively use margins to help me layout text and images. We then spent an hour or so working on our manifestos so that we could learn the printing settings as well.

Prevent project

Research

I began my research by looking into articles around prevent and the arguments and stories around it to try and start looking at narratives. As well as some shocking stories in these articles the illustrations i found were also great and I research the artists and their work.

From my research i was amazed at the amount of negative disruption the prevent strategy has had on school children and education and found this was a key thing i wanted to document. I then came up with the idea of having a school desk with books on it with police tape over the image demonstrating the the intervention and disruption that the police have and trigger by the prevent strategy.

Final piece

Over all I would say that I am am really happy with the idea that I came up with and fell that I effectively used my research to come up with this. However, I am not happy with the execution and I feel that while my research provided me with a great idea it did not give me great depth and create a detailed digital illustration with a limited style. In future I think I would need to look into researching in more detail or even changing to form to photography graphic design or sculpture. I would also like to plicate more time to it in future.

Black history month project

Research

I began the research stage of this Projects visiting galleries and looking at artists work which related to black peoples identity and history.

I started generating ideas from the primary and secondary sources images and just used the images to inspire me. The main ideas that i started working with what the identity and design of things like the signs on the marches as well as the amazing work of some of the influential figures in the human rights movement. I then came up with the idea to create a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr but instead of portray him in a plain frame to display him on a protest sign.

Development

After i had developed the idea as far as i could i then started to produce the image digitally.

I the brought it together to produce a final image.

Start of manifesto book making project

On day one Ollie gave a talk about end papers and what they are used for, and then we went to the library to begin research into end papers as well as to start looking at lino work.

We then had a practical workshop led by Olly and Jos teaching the us how to cut and print lino. I managed to generate a few ideas as well as to experiment with the lino so that i understood the process so that i could effectively plan the next day of working.
